From the beginning, Bal Harbor Shops was a bold attempt. Located between the Atlantic Gulf and Biscayne in the village of Bal Harbor housing, it was built at the World War II barracks. Instead of the covered, air -conditioned folk centers of the day, Stanley Whitman built a street of shop open to the sky; middle landscape with planting and lush resources; and sheltered the parking lot with hundreds of coconut palms.

But it was the mixing of all-round tenants-like the Martha and Toy Emporium Fao Schwarz salon-made it a sensation of Southern Florida.
